By default, Retently sends your full global topic list to the AI when classifying survey responses. If you run multiple campaigns for different products, brands, or languages, a single shared list often doesn't fit. You can configure each campaign to use only the topics relevant to it.
Prerequisites: the AI label
Only topics marked with the AI label are eligible for AI classification. You'll see this column on the Settings β Feedback Attributes page.
When you create a new topic, enable the Use in AI classification option. Without it, the topic will not be sent to the AI, regardless of whether it's assigned to a campaign.
Removing the AI label from a topic removes it from every campaign it was assigned to immediately. Any campaign that previously included that topic will stop sending it to the AI.
Step 1: Create the topic (if it doesn't exist yet)
Go to Settings β Feedback Attributes
Click + New Topic and enter the name
Enable Use in AI classification
Save
If the topic already exists and already has the AI label, skip to Step 2.
Step 2: Switch the campaign to a custom topic list
Open the campaign you want to configure.
Go to the Analytics section.
Under Topic List, select Custom Topics instead of Global Topics.
Click Save before continuing. The page must be saved for the custom mode to take effect.
After saving, you'll see a counter such as "0 of 12 global topics selected," which confirms the campaign is now in custom mode with no topics assigned yet.
Step 3: Assign topics to the campaign
Click Manage Topic List
On the new page that opens, select the topics you want this campaign to use
Click Save Topic Assignment
The counter on the Analytics page within the campaign will update to reflect how many topics are now active for this campaign (for example, "1 of 12 global topics selected").
Excluding a topic from a campaign
If you have a topic that should appear in some campaigns but not others, switch the campaigns that should exclude it to custom topics, then select everything except that topic.
For example, if you have a "Health" topic that applies only to one campaign:
On that campaign: switch to custom topics, select "Health" (and any others you need).
On every other campaign that should not include "Health": switch to custom topics, select all topics except "Health".
How global and custom modes interact
Global Topics (default): All topics with the AI label across your entire account are sent to the AI.
Custom Topics: Only the topics you've selected for that specific campaign are sent to the AI.
A topic created in Settings β Feedback Attributes is part of the global list. If any campaign is still using global mode, it will pick up every new topic you add there that has the AI label. Switch campaigns to custom mode when you need tighter control.
