Expire unanswered email surveys

Set how long an email survey stays open after it is sent.

Written by Alex Bitca

Survey expiration lets you set how long an email survey can be answered after it is sent. Once that period passes, a recipient who has not answered yet can no longer open the survey or submit a rating. This keeps late responses from being counted against a period or an experience that is long over.

The setting is available for email campaigns and is off by default.

Turn on survey expiration

  1. Go to Campaigns and open the email campaign you want to edit.

  2. Open the Misc tab and find the Survey expiration section.

  3. Switch on Expire unanswered surveys.

  4. Under Expire survey after, enter a number and choose days or hours.

  5. Save the campaign.

The default is 30 days. You can set anything from 1 hour up to 365 days (or 8,760 hours). Hours are useful for time-sensitive surveys, for example a survey about a support conversation that should be answered the same day.

How the expiration period is counted

The period is counted separately for each survey email, starting from the moment that email is sent.

The setting applies to every survey the campaign has sent, including reminders. When you switch it on, surveys that were sent longer ago than the expiration period expire right away. When you switch it off, those surveys can be answered again.

What recipients see

When a recipient opens an expired survey, either by clicking a rating in the email or by opening the survey link, they see a page saying that the survey has expired and is no longer accepting responses. No rating is recorded.

What is not affected

  • Responses already received. Expiration never removes or changes feedback that is already in your account.

  • Surveys the recipient already started. If a recipient clicked a rating before the survey expired, they can still come back to the survey afterwards to finish it or change their answers.

  • Other channels. Link, in-app, and other non-email campaigns do not have this setting.
