Why your new account already has data

New accounts start with sample responses and contacts. Here is how the demo data works and how to remove it.

Written by Alex Bitca

When you finish creating a new Retently account, Retently fills it with demo data: sample survey responses, contacts, and comments for a fictional company similar to yours. The demo data lets you see how your dashboard, responses, topics, trends, and reports look with real-world volume before your own customers start replying.

A banner at the top of every page tells you the account holds demo data:

"Demo data for a sample company. It clears automatically with your first customer response."

What the demo data includes

The sample set matches the business type you chose at signup.

The demo data covers more than the past year, so every date range in your reports shows results. It uses your account's own campaigns, so you see the reports for the surveys you have set up.

Demo contacts use fictional names and addresses. They never receive surveys or emails, and you can't send replies or messages to them from the Responses page.

When the demo data disappears

The demo data clears automatically when your first customer response arrives, or when you import feedback. From that point, your account shows only your own data.

Test surveys you send to yourself don't count. You can preview and answer your own surveys as often as you like, and the demo data stays in place. Your own test responses remain in the account after the demo data clears.

Clear the demo data yourself

Account admins can remove the demo data at any time:

  1. Click Clear it now in the banner at the top of the page, or go to Settings → Account and click Clear demo data in the Demo data section.

  2. Confirm with Clear.

Clearing removes all demo responses and contacts permanently and can't be undone.

Clearing doesn't touch your campaigns, survey templates, or any responses and contacts that are your own. The contact properties and customer tags added for the sample company stay in your account settings, and you can delete them if you don't need them.
