You can edit the appearance of the survey template to match it with your company branding so that the survey feels familiar to survey respondents.

Even though the template has a predefined layout that you can slightly adjust, you can customize pretty much everything else in the template's styling, such as changing colors, texts, etc.

In this article, we will cover the most important aspects of the survey template customization that will help you successfully adjust it to your needs.

Template logo and background colors

The first thing to keep in mind is that the logo image that will be displayed across the whole template and the background colors can be configured only from the "Identify customer" page in the template editor. These changes will be carried on automatically to the other template questions, and the Thank You page.

Template logo customization

By default, when creating a new survey template, it will lack a logo image. To upload a logo, find the image area on the "Identify customers" page and drop the image file in the area, or simply click the "Or select file" button.

A pop-up window will ask you to choose an image from your computer.

Once the image was added to the template, you can click on it to adjust it further. The supported options are:

  • Change the logo's position: left, center, right;

  • Change the logo's size in the template by dragging the lower-right corner of the image.

If you need to replace a logo in the template, then all you need to do is to click on the logo so that the adjustment options appear and then click the camera icon. This will bring back the pop-up asking you to choose a new image from your computer and replace the existing one.

Template background colors customization

To change a color, you will need to access the color menu, which is represented by a square icon filled with a specific color, as in this example:

There are three background sections whose colors you can change:

  • Progress line color: This is a colored strip line at the top of the template. Aside from its aesthetic role, this line also indicates the progress of someone answering the survey. For example, when a respondent answers the survey, if they have reached the middle of the survey, this line will be half-colored.

  • Header color: This is the top section of the survey template.

  • Body color: This section covers everything after the header of the survey template.

Individual template pages customization

Now that you've defined the template's logo and background colors, you can proceed with customizing individual template questions and pages. These changes will only be displayed on the question or page where you have applied them and they will not be carried on to other questions or pages.

There is a set of elements that you will find across the template, and we will cover them in the following chapters.

Question variations

Before we go any further, it's important to know that aside from the "Main rating" question, all the other questions in the template, and also the "Thank You" page, have multiple variations of them, in general terms, we will name them: Positive, Neutral, Negative.

Depending on what a person answers on the "Main rating" question, the rest of the template will be displayed to them in a specific version.

For example, if a person leaves a bad rating on the "Main rating" question, then they will see only the negative versions of the other questions and thank you page.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Almost all questions have three versions (positive, neutral, and negative), except the THUMBS survey template, which has only two versions: positive, and negative.

  • The name of the versions will differ based on the template's metric. For instance, if you're customizing an NPS template, then these versions will be called: Promoters, Passives, and Detractors.

This is why it's important to review and adjust each version of a question, to ensure that you're asking relevant questions based on your respondents' answers to the "Main rating" question.

You will be able to switch between versions by accessing a specific question from the sidebar, and underneath it, you will see a list of versions available.

To view or adjust a specific version of a question, just click on the version name and it will be displayed in the viewer on the right.

Text block customization

Basically on each page of the survey template, there is at least one text box that you can adjust. Every element that is surrounded by a dashed line, is a block where you can edit any text encased in it. Here's an example:

NOTE: It's also important to keep in mind that there are also elements that serve a specific purpose, but still allow you to edit their text.

For example, there is the CSAT survey question, which has buttons with text as rating options. Aside from the main purpose of this element, of being rating buttons, you can also edit the text in each rating button as if it's a regular text field:

In order to edit a text box, you will need to click on it, which will give you the possibility to fully edit the text, but you will also see a list with text styling options appear at the top of the text field:

When applying a text style, please keep in mind that the changes will take effect only on the selected portion of the text. Therefore, if you need to re-style the whole text in a block, then you will need to make sure that the whole phrase is selected. The text styling options are:

  • Font type selector

  • Text size selector

  • Text color

  • Text styles (bold, italic, underlined)

  • Text alignment (left, center, right)

It's also worth mentioning that the text styling options might differ from block to block due to specific technical limitations. For example, some elements, such as the "Not likely" or "Very likely" will lack the text-align options because they're already aligned to fit the layout.

Also, as a rule, text blocks do not support the option to embed links into words, with a single exception, the "Thank You" page's text boxes. On this page, the text styling options will include an extra link option:

Rating buttons customization

The rating buttons can also be customized, and the options differ based on the metric of the rating question. Here's a list of all types of rating buttons and the styling options they support:

  • NPS: Change the shape of the buttons, activate the colored version of the buttons, and style the text inside the buttons.

  • CSAT: Change the shape of the buttons, activate the colored version of the buttons, and style the text inside the buttons.

  • CES: Change the shape of the buttons, activate the colored version of the buttons, and style the text inside the buttons.

  • 5-STAR: Change the wight of the stars, and change the color of all the buttons.

  • EMOJI: Change the emoji style and size.

  • THUMBS: Change the thumbs emoji style and size.

  • PMF: Change the shape of the buttons, activate the colored version of the buttons, and style the text inside the buttons.

"Submit" buttons customization

On the pages of some questions, you will also see a "Submit" button. You can change the text inside the button, and the button's color, but keep in mind that the changes have to be done individually in all versions of the question (positive, neutral, and negative), otherwise you will end up having different "Submit" buttons unless this is what you have intended.

The submit buttons are currently displayed in the following types of questions:

  • Identify customers

  • Open-ended

  • Multiple-option

Removing options from the template

Some template pages will support additional unique elements that can be removed if needed. Any element that has a red X icon can be removed from the page:

If you've removed an option by mistake, or simply want to return it to the page, then you can re-activate it from the "Layout settings" section in the sidebar:
